Flags for Iowa City

is a free, participatory flag project that is engaging residents in making flags that represent them and what they find important about Iowa City. All the flags will fly over Black Hawk Mini Plaza to be decoded and enjoyed by the whole city when we can all be together again.

Update and report--June 8, 2020,

I am so excited for this project, but Flags for Iowa City has been neglected by me lately and I am behind on orders, please be patient as we get caught up with getting your flag kits in the mail.

My family and I live in Minneapolis. Its been intense here --from being blocks away from where George Floyd was murdered by the Minneapolis Police and where Lake Street was burned. White people like me finally feel a small taste of the fear that black and brown folks feel every day on our streets. For the first time I am thinking seriously and researching intently ideas around defunding the police. I encourage you to do the same, it sounds scary but its clear we need deep change.

Its important to me as an artist and citizen to acknowledge that this country provides levels of privilege and opportunity to white people that it has never provided to black folks, people of color and Native people. My hope is that this moment pushes all of us (but especially white folks like me) to continue/start/learn the work we must do. I think art plays a crucial role and your participation in this project can help in small ways--providing opportunities to think about your place and to come together in conversation and connection.

As a small way to acknowledge George Floyd’s murder and support for Black Lives, I have added a symbol to represent this.
